Chapter 24

Megan woke up slowly. She was warm, safe, and comfortable. It took her a few moments to come fully around, and to recognize that she wasn’t at home. She wasn’t even in a bed.

She was on Tristan’s couch, though that didn’t really describe everything. She was mostly lying on Tristan.

He was sprawled in the corner, Megan curled into his lap, his arms wrapped tight enough around her that she couldn’t escape. As she lay there, thinking about it a little more, she decided she didn’t want to.

She prided herself on being a smart girl. She was hopefully self-aware. Though according to Tristan last night, she hadn’t ever picked up that she didn’t understand the “why” behind a lot of the emotions. Relaxing a little into the sleeping man under her, she pondered that.

She’d left more than one relationship at the hint of problems. She’d been around often enough to know she hated when things ended, but had she cut bait too early? Maybe she had, but she was here with Tristan now. Despite hearing everything she’d spilled out, despite the fact that she could still hear him, he still wanted her.

If, or when, things went wrong, it would rip her heart out. But the last week without him had been so terrible it was obvious to her there was no surviving Tristan. The best she could do was throw herself in and hope it went well. Worst case, she could enjoy what she had and postpone the inevitable.

His arms tightened around her, even though he was fully asleep.

He’d made no moves on her last night, just quietly shifted into the corner of the couch and waited for her to cry. She didn’t. She’d shed far too many tears for her father over the years. And far too many from him. Megan was done.

She might have cried for the loss of her mother and sisters, but that loss was still too fresh. She wasn’t sure though that Tristan didn’t shed a few on her behalf, but he didn’t hate her. He didn’t think her father was right. And he said he was angry for what she went through. That no one tried to help her or even gave her so much as a therapist to talk to.

Here then was what she wanted. What she’d always wanted. Someone who understood her and still wanted to be with her. Someone who didn’t care that she could hear whatever his brain broadcast. She didn’t want someone who thought it was a cool trick, who liked the skill more than he liked her, and Tristan was none of those. He just wanted her.

Again he shifted. He’d be awake soon and Megan decided if she was going to throw herself into it, she was going to throw herself in. She rolled, turning a little, not enough to loosen his grip, but enough to get a little closer.

He moaned in his sleep, his fingers twitching against her hip as she curled into him. His fingers twitched again and she realized her skirt had shifted, his hand was under the fabric.
